PSPCL’s repeated reminders to various government departments for payment of monthly electricity bills have failed to move the authorities as an amount of Rs 101 crore is pending in Sangrur circle alone.

There are five subdivisions – Sangrur, Sunam, Lehra, Dirba and Patran – in the Sangrur circle. With contributions of Rs 43.70 crore, the Department of Water Supply and Sanitation tops the list of defaulters, followed by the Department of Rural Development and Panchayat (Rs 25.27 crore), the Department of from the local government (Rs 21.93 crore) and the Department of General Administration. (Rs 55 lakh). In addition, PSPCL officials are trying to recover money from the Departments of Higher Education, Transport, Sports and Youth, and Revenue Rehabilitation and Disaster Management, among others.

“Not a single civil servant wants to delay paying their electricity bill. But the delay is happening because we are not getting the required money from the state government. In many departments, the government does not allow the collection of charges from residents, resulting in the accumulation of electricity bills, ”said a senior official.

Another senior official said they tried to get the required money. “PSPCL officials cut off the power supply to many slum dwellers after failing to pay exorbitant bills without any investigation. But they took no action against government departments, which fail to pay crore electricity bills. Why these double standards? Asked Randeep Deol, chief of Sangrur BJP.

Rattan Kumar Mittal, Deputy Chief Engineer, PSPCL, Sangrur, said they had done their best to recover the outstanding amount.
