PUNE Cash-strapped Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has decided to cut consumers’ power even though they haven’t paid a month’s worth of electricity bills. The move comes after more than 0.6 million defaulters were found in the cities of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad alone, which is more than other cities in western Maharashtra.

Ankush Nale, West Maharashtra Regional Director, MSEDCL, said: “Arrears have exceeded 25,000 million rupees in the West Maharashtra region, which includes the districts of Pune, Sangli, Satara, Solapur and Kolhapur. MSEDCL faces serious financial problems at the state level. Thus, we have stepped up action against defaulters, including those who have not paid a month’s worth of bills. Previously, we were given up to six months to pay the arrears, but we have no choice now. We need to collect the arrears to ensure the financial stability of the MSEDCL. We have cut the power supply to more than 0.1 million consumers in the last two weeks.

“We have given targets to each division to collect the arrears. In the district of Pune, we have given a target of Rs15,000 million for this month. We have also launched a night watch with the aim of taking action against failures whose power supply has been disconnected but who are stealing electricity from their neighbors and other sources, ”Nale said.

MSEDCL has also decided to file criminal complaints under the Indian Electricity Act (2003) against defaulters who steal power from other sources.

An MSEDCL official said: “After cutting off the power supply to some of the defenders, we discovered that they were stealing electricity from neighbors and other sources such as street lights. Therefore, we started the night watch to take criminal action against these people. “

According to statistics from MSEDCL Pune circle, there are over 2.4 million consumers in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, which include residential, commercial, industrial and other consumers. Out of more than 2.4 million consumers, 0.622 million have not paid their electricity bills to date. The unpaid amount is Rs2.910 million ranging from one month to one year of unpaid contributions.

MSEDCL called on consumers to pay their electricity bills as soon as possible. MSEDCL has opened collection centers on weekends which are operational during official working hours. Consumers can pay their bills via their mobile or the MSEDCL website and MSEDCL has also provided the option to pay arrears of over Rs 10,000 via RTGS or NEFT.
