Maryland Athletics Launches Maryland Marketplace Powered by Opendorse

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Maryland Athletics announced the launch of the Maryland Market, one of the premier marketplaces for licensed college sports names, images, and school likenesses. The marketplace powered by Opendorse will maximize NIL support for Terrapin student-athletes.

Maryland is one of the first programs nationwide to provide a unique marketplace platform for sending supporters to access student-athletes and provide NIL opportunities. The Marketplace gives Maryland fans, brands and sponsors the ability to browse, book, feature and pay current and former Terp student-athletes for NIL activities on a compliant platform, designed specifically for needs of athletes.

Current Maryland student-athletes from all 20 athletic programs can be found on the Maryland Market. Additionally, former Maryland athletes who use Opendorse can also be accessed through the marketplace.

“We strive to be a national leader in the NIL space and the launch of the Maryland Marketplace powered by Opendorse is another example of Maryland’s boldness,” said Damon Evans, Barry P. Gossett Sports Director. “Our relationship with Opendorse continues to be strong and we work daily on education and opportunities for our Terp student-athletes to thrive in the NIL era.”

Through the Maryland Marketplace, each Terp athlete will receive an Opendorse profile, which they can customize and promote to fans on their personal social networks. When an NIL offer is offered to them, athletes receive a notification via the Opendorse app, where they can choose to accept and complete the opportunity. Upon completion, the student-athlete immediately receives compensation in their account and may automatically disclose their activity to Maryland Athletics.

“Maryland’s commitment to empowering student-athletes in the NIL space is unparalleled,” said Opendorse CEO Blake Lawrence. “With the launch of this marketplace, every Terps fan and alumnus can now find, feature, and support every student-athlete in Maryland with a proven platform. Year two of NIL is here, and student-athletes across the University of Maryland are about to benefit a great way.”

The Opendorse Marketplace is built on a decade of athlete marketing technology and experience. Opendorse has facilitated hundreds of thousands of NIL agreements and endorsements with athletes at all levels of sport. The Opendorse Marketplace is used by over 80,000 athletes to manage transactions from initiation to payment, and even preparing tax returns.

In addition to Marketplace, Maryland is continuing several other areas of its partnership with Opendorse, receiving full access to the all-in-one NIL platform. Maryland continues to provide its student-athletes and staff with the best compliance, content, and education tools from Opendorse:

  • Compliance: After entering into an agreement, athletes can automatically disclose activity details to their institution to ensure eligibility.
  • Content: Athletes have on-demand access to share photos and videos of games, practices and more.
  • Education: Athletes receive virtual in-person and on-demand education sessions from industry leaders at companies like Meta, Overtime, Players’ Tribune, Opendorse and more.
